CHANNEL HEX: HERE BE ISLANDS, I PRESUME by Lizbeth Myles

1: A small rowboat sits in the middle of a serene ocean. At one end is a pile of useful explorer-y supplies. At the other end sits explorer EUPHEMIA LAROCHE. She scribbles away in her journal.

1 JOURNAL: DAY THIRTY. AFTER MANY YEARS OF INVESTIGATION AND A MONTH AT SEA I, EUPHEMIA LAROCHE, RENOWNED EXPLORER, COMPETENT CARTOGRAPHER, AND AMATEUR BOTANIST - HAVE LOCATED THE…LOCATION OF KELPIC ISLE.

2 JOURNAL: ACCORDING TO MY DISCOVERIES THIS MYTHICAL ISLE APPEARS BUT ONCE EVERY SIXTEEN YEARS.

2: She continues writing and we see an open pocket watch sitting next to her.

3: JOURNAL: BY MY CALCULATIONS, THOSE SIXTEEN YEARS SHOULD BE UP IN THREE SECONDS…TWO…

3: The ocean has become rougher; waves rock the boat. EUPHEMIA is delighted. It’s happening! It’s really happening!

4: The island is rising out of the ocean, and the boat is rising with it.

5: Up EUPHEMIA and the boat go, higher and higher, and the bottom of the boat begins to crack.

7: A very pointy rock has pierced the bottom of the boat.

3 EUPHEMIA: OH NO.

8: She’s turned her attention to the island below. Very, very far below. Her boat’s spiked on the sheer summit of the highest mountain, and there’s no way down.

4 EUPHEMIA: OH NO.

9: We see the whole island from sea level, strange and beautiful, full of weird trees and exotic animals. Perhaps dinosaurs or griffins or extinct megafauna. The tiny silhouette of the boat is visible.

5 JOURNAL: DAY THIRTY AND A BIT. FOR MY NEXT EXPEDITION THE EQUIPMENT LIST WILL INCLUDE MOUNTAINEERING GEAR AND A SPARE BOAT.
