The big computer job didn’t pan out as I’d hoped (but it did pan out as I’d anticipated) so big long diversion away from drawing and no cash. But anyways… I’m back on the artwork.
Just scanned in pages 5 – 8 of episode 1 of this strip. Started pencilling page 9. Hoping for page 9 over the rest of the week and pages 10 and 11 over the weekend. Only leaving page 12 and then episode 2.
Was asked today why the drawing takes so long, and to be fair – there’s quite a bit of procrastination involved in the whole process, but still, it ain’t as easy as you’d think (or maybe it is for other people but it ain’t for me).
You kinda pour over the script looking to see what’s going on and then the name of the game is communication – distilling the script down into images that can be read easily. I like to minimise the information on each panel – if it’s not important then I’ll try and drop it. Important things are the characters speaking, their relationship to each other (in all senses) and the scene – where are they and when are they. Even given that my focus is on getting rid of anything extraneous you still find yourself drawing too much stuff. That character that doesn’t speak for two pages still has to be shown to be near the other two characters speaking – and the only way to do that is to draw some sort of establishing shot of them all together. And the scene that takes place a little later, but, you know, is in the same place but indoors – now you’ve gotta figure out how to dress the set and leave props around that will turn up later to help link the two areas – if you see the inside of a tent you’ve gotta draw the outside of it to establish it’s in the vicinity of these guys.
So you now… it’s harder than it looks – still the rewards are there, its kinda cool when you do a really nice bit of inking and you sit back and look at the line and think – wow, I did that.
